Do-dai

About the different models of do-dai, the lower hard portion of the do:

The Kyoto Shoryudo is one of most, if not the most, famous do makers in Japan,. They are most famous for the fine finish lacquer applied to their do and the meticulous finish. The same company was contracted to resurrect the lost art of lacquered gold-leaf finishing for the reconstruction of "Kinkakuji" the Golden Pavillion in Kyoto, after it was lost to a fire. Some of their do are used for purely decorative and ceremonial items. However, Japanese lacquer being quite durable, these do are favored by high-level kenshi throughout Japan for their combination of beauty and long lasting quality.

The standard bamboo do should not be considered any bit inferior in quality. We source our do-dai from three of Japan's most famous do-dai makers depending on size, shape, or any other special factors that are suited to these specialty makers.

Fiber do-dai are made by only a couple of makers. The particular fiber do we offer in our online store is the heaviest and most durable do-dai available. It is nearest to a bamboo do in appearance, weight, and most importantly protective qualities. Some other do-dai are very light, and may not offer the protection a sturdy, heavier do-dai can offer. Therefore, we do not offer the lighter version as a regular item. Fiber do-dai are nearly impervious to moisture changes, but shape will change with temperature. They are more flexible than bamboo do-dai and all things combined make them handy for traveling. However, with this said, you will still notice that nearly all high-level kenshi travel with bamboo do-dai regularly, preferred for their beauty, traditional aspects, and durability, with no apparent demerit.

Selecting Size

Selecting the Correct Size Do

Differences in body types may affect do size selection. Persons with wide bodies at waist or mid-torso may require a larger size do, whereas persons who's raw waist measurement is large due to a protruding belly, may actually require the narrower do of a smaller size.

The surest way to confirm the do size required is to measure a known do with good fit. Be sure to wear keiko-gi, hakama, and tare as usual to provide for the exact circumstances in which the do will be worn. If you do not already have your own do, you may wish to call on your teacher and fellow club members for a momentary trial of their do to make your check and measurement.

Space sufficient to insert one hand closed into a fist, between trunk and the inside of the do, will verify proper fit.

In general, the following sizing chart will provide average size requirements; however, take care to consider the factors listed above that might influence correct sizing:

Waist sizes of 85 centimeters and less: Small

Waist sizes from 85 to 90 centimeters: Standard

Waist sizes of 90 centimeters and over: Large

Very large sizes Contact Us*

Do opening-width may change with temperature and humidity, for more information, please refer to the Information Page titled “Caring for the Do.”

*Very large sizes: For very large kenshi, bamboo do with 64 pieces are available as a custom order. These can be of the standard bamboo do class, or the premium Shoryu Do type. Size and special finishes will affect the price, so for further information, please direct your inquiry to our Customer Service Department at info@chibabogu.com

3-Stripe Option

Do 3-Stripe Option, or "sanbon-ashi"

When building a new do, taller persons, persons who are long-torsoed, or persons who are just big overall, may wish to have another line added to the side projections of the mune, the chest portion of the do.

These are the lines on the top edge of the do, in the area just under the arms. The standard is two lines; however an additional line, totaling three lines on each side will create higher side-wall for the do, provide for slightly more protection coverage, and better proportions overall.

This treatment requires an additional 15 to 30 days during crafting, and is available at only an additional JPY 1,500. You can make this selection by simply checking the box in the do ordering page marked "Three Stipes."

Another option to provide you with truly custom service.
